Kirkcaldy is the birthplace of Adam Smith, founding father of modern economics. The Kirkcaldy Museum and Art Gallery is very interesting. Although not large in comparison to other exhibits, it does feature a collection of paintings by the Scottish Colourists and local history bonanza. Beveridge Park locally, has beautiful gardens and boating pond
Kirkcaldy Area
South of Kirkcaldy you’ll find a number of smaller coastal town of Kinghorn and Burntisland. Just outside Kinghorn is a statue to the memory of King Alexander 3rd of Scotland, who fell to his death when his horse slipped during bad weather somewhere near Inverkeithing. It’s said his ghost haunts the area still, searching for his queen.
Burntisland
Burntisland is another royal burgh which was granted the title back in 1541. I recommend scaling Bin Hill just behind the town for some great landscape views.
Falkland
Falkland is another small village which lies at the foot of East Lomond. The village is very historic and gained Royal Burgh status by James 2nd in 1458. Falkland Palace was built on the site of Falkland Castle in the 15th century.

A short distance you’ll find Culross Palace. Established in the late 16th century as a residence to Sir George Bruce, a wealthy local merchant. The palace and garden have been painstakingly restored the their former glory. The garden contains plants which would have been familiar in period like root vegetables such as skirret, and scorzonera and fruit trees such as medlar (a small brown apple like fruit, only edible when partly decayed) and quince (a cross between an apple and a pear made into jams and jelly).
The Coastal View from Culross Palace:
The coastal view over the garden and palace and out to the Forth Estuary is one site you will not want to miss at any time of year. It was here that for the first time coal was mined from underneath the sea. A mine shaft was sliced from an artificial island, where ships could dock to transport the coal. Sir George Bruce gained the majority of his wealth from the “Moat Pit”. Indeed coal was so plentiful that it was used to evaporate the sea water to create salt for other parts of Europe. It was estimated it took 15+ tons to make just one tone of salt.
The Cistercian monks of Culross Abbey
The Original Miners in this Area were in fact the Cistercian monks of Culross Abbey, which was founded in 1217 started the industry. The monks also were renowned for producing illuminated manuscripts.

St Andrews is not just the Home of Golf the name it inherited came from a Greek monk St Rule who was selected by an angel, and advised to collect the remains of St Andrew from Istanbul and travel to the edge of the known world. St Rule followed his instructions but was shipwrecked near present day St Andrews.

St Andrews Castle nearby has been the main residence of the various Bishops of St Andrews since the 12th century. St Andrews University was established in 1411 and is the oldest in Scotland.

St Andrews has also been recognised as the being the birthplace of modern golf and quite rightly is the location of the British golf museum, which is just behind the Royal and Ancient Clubhouse. There are two quality beaches, great for a stroll.

The area south of St. Andrews is known as the east neuk. There are many other small fishing villages, such as Crail, Anstruther and Elie, popular all year round. All the villages are close together and you can visit all locations without much travel at all.

Kellie Castle

Kellie Castlelies is located a few miles from Pitenweem. It is said the gardens are truly a joy to behold.

The county looks on the map like a Labrador dog’s head. In the south it had previously been heavily industrialised with many coal mines and factories. Unfortunately, for the local employment situation much of the heavy industry has now disappeared. St Andrews (The home of Golf) lies in the north east corner of the county along with the many small fishing villages of the East Neuk. A great way to see the coast is to walk or cycle the Fife Coastal Path.

Travel

Transport is not a problem to this part of the country. With the railway line north from Edinburgh going along the Fife coast to Kirkcaldy from here the line goes further inland towards Cupar and north to Dundee. If you want to explore Fife I would advise that you hire a vehicle if you want to truly explore the area. It takes less than an hour to drive to most locations in Fife from Edinburgh Airport.
